The last few cakes I have done have screamed "little girl"! First up is a Cinderella Barbie cake. I wished I could have tamed her bangs a little but she came packaged with a can of Aqua Net apparently. Next up is a simple, but adorable, Minnie Mouse cake. The last of my frilly cakes was a unicorn music party. The mom combined two cake ideas she found and told me to have fun.

This weekend saw three Disney inspired cakes! First cake delivered was a Toy Story cake in the form of Woody's shirt. I also had a Moana cake complete with a suitcase of adorable little toys. Pua, the pig, was a bobble-head!! How cute is that? The last cake was for the smallest pixie in the house. We officially have a 7 year old here and she has become VERY specific about what her cake should look like. This year's theme was Rapunzel and we needed to include her pal, Pascal, more than anything.
To say I was excited with how this cake turned out is an understatement. I was so nervous at the beginning when the mom of a recent entomology grad student said she was looking for a beetle cake. But with my own bug expert in the house explaining segmented legs and body parts of an insect on hand, I started in on the ground beetle. With the main color being black, I knew I needed to amp up the shine and head texture with a super pearl luster dust and a giant clean blush brush. The youngest pixie helped me arrange a photo shoot outside for this guy before we headed out on our delivery.
It's December, y'all!! We are almost done with this wild rollercoaster called 2020. I have had my last crazy weekend of orders and I am slowing down here in our cul de sac until the new year. This cake below was done with edible images on rice paper for the bottom tier decorations. The original cake had a comic strip around the sides but I wasn't finding anything really appropriate for a 3 year old. Some of those old cartoons are something else!! So we decided to go with single poses and I think it came out adorable. The fondant topper was done by sketching out the pose in a thin edible ink marker and filling in where needed with food coloring. And I never get tired of unicorn or mermaid cakes. You can have so much fun with them! Fun boxes of cupcakes went along with this little cake for a birthday parade this weekend.
What do you do when the customer says I have no clue what design I want? You ask what the bday person's interests are, right? "He likes beer, NC state, computers, tools because he's handy, star wars, skulls....oh and kites." Ummm....you got it! This next cake was super cool to work on. It's a break apart egg toy that reveals a battle dragon. Somehow my kids have missed this craze.
To boldly go where...nope. Wrong one.
A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...that's the one. In a galaxy far, far away there was a wife looking for a baker to make her husband's favorite Star Wars character into a cake. And can I say that I am so happy with how this turned out. All the paint splotches and edible silver leaf to show the blasts and wear and tear just add so much character to this cake. I got to work on a really cool Marvel Super Hero cake this weekend. The bottom was funfetti with vanilla buttercream and a strawberry puree while the top was a dummy tier of foam. I also got to try modeling chocolate really for the first time with the Hulk hand on top. Another cartoon cake I got to do was a Booba cake. Never heard of it? Me neither till this request. Booba debuted on Youtube and was picked up on Netflix if you want to check it out. I also got to make a very yummy wedding cake. It's a spiced cake with cinnamon and nutmeg, vanilla buttercream and a cinnamon brown sugar crumble between layers. I kinda want to make it again this weekend.
This week was full of birthdays for some men I know. The first cake below is for my oldest pixie who turned 9. I get it. Nine isn't anywhere close to manhood. I love him but he is starting to smell and eat me out of house and home. it's just around the corner. My son has become fascinated with the Wings of Fire book series so he asked for an ice wing dragon for his cake. I made sure he was on hand for all the technical questions like talon color, length of spikes, and more. The next two cakes happen to be for two dads I know who both turned 40 on the same day. How cool is that? One lives and breathes anything related to Philadelphia Eagles and the other dad loves to party.
I really enjoy sketching out a client's idea and then seeing it come to life. This weekend I got to work on a Top Wings cake for a little guy named Walker. The mom said she just wasn't finding anything that spoke to her so we came up with a sketch to feature his favorite character from the show. The mom asked for a little more greenery along the edges. I also changed Swift's final pose a little and created him in my trusty food coloring and Vodka painting technique. And here is the final result!
This weekend was a trip! A trip to the pediatric ER for the smallest Pixie and some fun cakes got worked in somehow. Both cakes I did were Disney themed this weekend. First cake up came before the hospital trip and featured a baby Stitch for a baby shower! The second cake was super fun to work on. The dad of the birthday boy and I worked together to create the design for the cake. Initially, he wanted the plane crashing on the side but I convinced him to have it crash into the top. The birthday party was outside. in. August. I didn't think it would end well. We had the nephews up front and the main bad guy on the back too! All the images were created with edible ink markers, food coloring, and vodka.
