I have lots to post so be sure to check out the gallery for some new stuff as well!! The cake below was MASSIVE! That is a 19" by 14" board and it is FULL of details. Besides pirates and treasure, we also got to deliver the wedding cake that belonged to my son's teacher. The sweet couple took down a tree on cleared property and it served as the platters for the cake and cupcakes! We had to have another discussion that "football" can also mean "soccer" in the household again with this cake. And last, but not least, a Cinderella cake fit for a princess

I know almost all the lyrics to that song now. That's all. That's how I spent my kids' winter break. The house is actually foam so the birthday girl can place it on her dresser or bookcase to keep for a while. The grassy hill, complete with a flower bench, is made of chocolate cake with a rich chocolate buttercream for the neighborhood to share.
I got to create a Harry Potter cake that was first done by Maria-Louise Cakes
But for the life of me I could not tell what was on the top parchment. So I made my own Marauder's Map! Quidditch hoops, a golden snitch, and a HufflePuff crest rounded out the decor. And I got the bday girl's age on the prefect badge to boot! It's almost Thanksgiving! This year has FLOWN BY! Don't you think? I got to try another anti-gravity cake and I felt a lot more comfortable completing this idea than the ramen noodle cake at the beginning of the summer. I grabbed the bday boy's fav beer at the moment and added in his love of Duke basketball to complete this cake. I've been able to work on 2 space cakes recently and I kept the same rocket ship for both. One cake just combined his love for dinos as well. And this last cake just had everyone giggling in the house. The mom was a new customer and explained that her twins shared absolutely nothing in common except for their love of pickles. So that's what we went with.
Let's start unwinding a little bit before...and now I have a sick kiddo. I did my happy dance too soon celebrating the end of another busy season. The quick cold snap and heat turning on in NC left my oldest with congestion so nothing serious. But I'm keeping him home to watch the Price is Right and sleep on the couch like I did when I was a kid. I got to deliver a massively heavy sheet cake decorated like a hockey rink and the couple's wedding date a few days ago. And another sports cake was delivered this week. The bottom half of the basketball is foam so there no chance of the cake falling apart. This last cake was nerve racking. I watched a few videos to make sure I had the technique down and still had to improvise when it came time to decorate. The honeycomb was done using bubble wrap and candy melts. The family had a chocolate allergy but that could have also been used in place of candy melts.
I measured the circumference of the cake and melted the candy. But when I started spreading out the melted candy, it quickly started to set against the cold countertops in my house and started cracking as I wrapped the cake. So I ran to get my travel hairdryer I keep in bathroom around the corner. It helped melt the candy again so I could press and mold the bubble wrap around the vanilla cake. I had a good laugh when I was done but I know better next time. I have two busy seasons a year. Spring and Fall. And I am slowly chugging along with this latest busy season. First up is a tale of two very different red and black cakes. Next we have a massive pirate cake complete with a ship on top! My favorite part is the tentacles coming out of the treasure chest. Here is a GIANT!! Bluey cake. This cake was so tall it wouldn't fit on my backdrop. The landscapes and characters were achieved by using printouts on rice paper. If you have never seen the show on Disney+...go subscribe now. It's adorable. And last, but not least, on this blog installment is a Little Blue Truck cake. The main portion of the cake is tinted buttercream but the decorations were done in fondant.
As we get ready to celebrate our 13th wedding anniversary here, I can't help but think of all the couples who have been jumping through hoops basically blindfolded during this pandemic. I was finally able to complete this wedding order after a year postponement. Their wedding venue was gorgeous down at The Meadows at Firefly Farm Preserve and they even had a donkey brought in to deliver Cheerwine and beers around to the guests!
And I thoroughly enjoyed it.. I purposely slowed down the last few weeks and took a week off entirely to celebrate my 40th bday. We rented a cabin outside of Asheville and spent time driving through apple orchards and exploring the area. But now it is time to get back to work and this week didn't disappoint. Before I left for my birthday trip, I was introduced to an okapi. Next up, we have a sweet painted flamingo cake with sugar leaves and flowers. Here is a subtle 40 cake for a friend of mine. Most of the inspiration cakes we came across were very bold in black with neon. But this idea of more muted pinks and gold really hit home. We completed the look with toppers or a Rubik's cube and a can of Aquanet! And I could not get a great picture of this one. The trap doors were causing some issues and ended up being cut in half so you could see Slimer better. But I think it went well with the birthday boy's movie marathon night!
My oldest pixie turned 10 years old this month. Double digits. A decade of having him a part of our lives.
We have done cakes to feature Transformers and cakes to look like a snake and a dragon. But he decided to go very mature this year. He wanted an indigo bunting. A bright blue bird that I grew up seeing at the home my parents built when I was younger. And I thought it was the perfect opportunity to try a new shape I have been seeing pop up here and there. This summer has been a blur of activity. It's been full of swim lessons, hot days, and checking places off of our bakery bucket list. We have introduced desserts like tiramisu, baklava, and the biggest cream puffs I have ever seen to our children. I have fallen a little short on posting cakes so here we go! First up, is a vintage Winnie the Pooh cake with an adorable honey pot smash cake. I was able to mold the cake and cover in buttercream. The only portions in fondant are the "Hunny" plate and the tiny knob on top. Next up is a "Two"tti Fruitti cake complete with all the bright colors you can find. I also completed a different take on a Frozen cake. This one featured a painted Anna and Olaf. The birthday girl is obsessed with carrots and carrot cake so I added a pile of carrots on top in front of the reindeer. This next cake was for a gorgeous woman I know. Her sweet husband ordered the cake and surprised her at dinner with it. And last, but not least, we got to celebrate my adorable nephew turning one. It was the first time we have all been able to gather for a family event since the pandemic hit so we had lots of reasons to celebrate this little man in our lives.
